Wire Free Xbox Kinect - Technical Details

The Kinect request for retrial sensing expanding for the Xbox 360 games console (originally known as project Natal) is an add-on unit that enables gamers to operate and interact with the console by just using gestures, body movements and spoken commands without the need to use a traditional game controller. The technology takes its inspiration from Nintendo's Wii Remote and Wii MotionPlus system. Sony is also planning to equip its Ps3 with a similar principles in the form of the PlayStation Move system.

Kinect open Date

Kinect is due to be released on 4 November 2010 and will be able to be purchased whether on its own or bundled with a console and game package.

Kinect Technical Details

The Kinect unit is in the form of a horizontal bar linked to a base via a motorized pivot. The unit is positioned below the Tv screen or monitor much like the Wii Sensor bar would be. Integrated into the unit is an Rgb camera, depth sensor (using an infrared projector and a monochrome Cmos sensor) and multi-array technology microphone. These items work in conjunction with Microsoft's software to achieve full-body 3D request for retrial capture, facial recognition and voice recognition. The free Xbox Kinect software automatically calibrates the hardware taking into notice the game in use and the corporal environment (walls, furniture, other equipment, etc). The software is capable of tracking up to six citizen simultaneously.

The processing of the facts gathered by the Kinect unit is handled by one of the Xbox 360's Xenon Cpu cores. It is said that the additional load of dealing with the Kinect data will take up between ten and fifteen percent of the 360's ready processing power.

Due to language difficulties, the voice recognition principles will only be ready in the United Kingdom, United States and Japan at the open date, with other territories being delayed until early 2011.

The Kinect software was industrialized by Microsoft with Israeli developer PrimeSense bringing in their expertise for the implementation of the 3D range camera technology. The Kinect software requires nearby 175 Mb of storehouse space and will therefore need an Xbox 360 with an integrated hard drive of adequate capacity.

The Kinect sensor has a range of between 1.2 and 3.5 metres (or 3.9-11 ft) and an angular range of 57 degrees horizontally and 43 degrees vertically. In expanding to this, the range can be adjusted by the integrated motor tilting the sensor up to an additional 27 degrees up or down.

Kinect Power supply

Thanks to the use of an integrated motor, the power supplied by the Xbox 360's Usb bus is not sufficient. To get nearby this the Kinect introduces a bespoke connector that combines communication and power at the Kinect end and splits into isolate Usb and Ac power at the other (this is included free with the Kinect retail package). Future versions of the games console, dubbed Xbox 360 S, contain an additional Aux port for the Kinect expedient that caters for both communication and power.

Kinect Accessories

There are some new Kinect accessories out for the Xbox 360 Kinect controller. These accessory items are specifically licensed and made by Xbox for Xbox 360 consoles.

The Kinect Adventures boat is a real size boat that can be uses in the sea or swimming pool, but it's a fantastic extra when you play the Kinect adventure game. It is well inflated and has a no slip security playing surface and it helps your carpet, so you don't wear out your carpet from playing Kinect games.

Xbox Kinect have also bought out a games mat, this is 55" x 78" and you place it 4' from the Xbox 360 Kinect's camera. This is a great idea; it keeps you within the Kinect sensors. Often when you are playing the games and having so much fun, you slip out of the sensors area and then the Kinect can't read you motions. So if you have the Kinect mat you know the area the senor reads your body movement in. Its added padded security for your floors and it is made out of a durable anti slip material.

Then there is the Kinect wall mount, this is a great for small spaces. By mounting the Kinect above your Tv, this adds about other foot to your living rooms space. If you play Kinect in a small space and often have trouble with the Kinect recognizing you, then this is a must and it is a very cheap price. 4 screws, someone standing behind you or a level to make sure it's placed properly, it well took me less than 3 minutes to place the wall mount. Super easy to do & is 100% enough to hold the Kinect sensor.

The Kinect floor stand is like a tripod and is great for those who have a large area to play in. This is a well designed stand for the Kinect that stands 2 feet tall. It is not adjustable but it stays at the recommended height for the Kinect and it is not adjustable. However, it is a great solution for a house that would like to have an easy way to mount the Kinect only during use.

Then we have the Xbox 360 Kinect extension cable, this works great if you need to enlarge your Kinect sensor. So if you bought an Xbox package with the Kinect sensor included you will need this cable. If you want an extension cable that's well compatible with Kinect because of the cut-out male to female connectivity of the cord, and then buy this cable, it works great but it's only 9ft.

There is also a Kinect Tv mount and is made of the same high gloss plastic that the Kinect is made from. The legs are plastic but sturdy enough to hold a sensor that is less than 5lbs.
Coming up in September there is the Zoom for Kinect. This is ideal for a smaller room. You can decrease the range of play up to forty percent and with the zoom wide angled lense you can play with two people with your Kinect controller.

These are the latest in Kinect accessories, so if you want to find out the prices or preview any of these items please check out Kinect Accessories there is fullness of good data for you to review.

Xbox 360 Kinect Usb postponement

Out of the Box

Recently I was able to get my hands on one of the new Xbox Kinects. For those who don't know the Xbox Kinect is Microsoft's sass to the Nintendo Wii and PlayStation Move. It is essentially a camera that you mount above or below your Tv and it senses your movements then translates them into movements in your video game. For instance, in a driving game you take put your arms in front of you and pretend to drive a car. It works alright for the most part but it does take a while to get use to. Any way one problem that I have run into with the Kinect is the way you join together the Kinect to your Tv (No pun intended).

"50 Foot Extension Cord For Microsoft Kinect"

Cable Troubles

The Xbox Kinect comes out of the box with a 9 foot cable. This is a tiny problem with the way my Home Theater is set up. See my home has the Tv Mounted on the Wall and I have my Xbox elsewhere in a near by closet. This is much supplementary then 9 feet.

After seeing nearby for a way to extend the cable, most of what I was seeing was the Microsoft branded extension cable that will run you about 50 dollars and it is only 10ft extension. Still not good enough for my needs. So I started seeing at Usb extension cables. The Xbox Kinect, when you buy it on its own, will come with a Usb converter cable that turns the special Kinect cable into a Usb connection. So I started trying out a few separate extension cables that I had ready to me.

Active and Passive Usb Extensions

I first tried out a thorough 6 foot Passive Usb extension. This did not work what so ever. The Kinect would not recognize that it was even plugged into the Xbox. I then tried out an active extension cable. I used a Sewell 16ft Active extension cable (you can get them at assorted places but I find this one to be the best deal)

After testing the Active extension cable it worked great. After plugging it in, the Kinect fired right up and the Xbox recognized the Kinect instantly. The guys at Sewell say they have tested it with these 16ft cables while daisy chaining them all together and have said it works. They even have a YouTube showing how it works.

Bigger Does Not always Mean Better...

I also was able to try a 33 foot active extension cable and it did not work. For some presume you can daisy chain the 16 foot extensions together but the 33 foot extensions do not work. Most likely it needs the active repeaters to be at those 16 foot intervals or it cant keep the signal constant. So if you need to extend your Xbox Kinect grab yourself a combine Usb Active extension cables and you should be fine.

Note: Make sure that you have the Usb association on your Kinect and not the special Xbox Kinect connection, if you have one of those and not a Usb, then you will have to buy the converter or just go for the expensive Microsoft cable

Also if you have a PlayStation Move, these also join together via Usb so you can use the same cables for those as well. Sewell Direct has a video of testing them with the Move and it seems to have the same limitations, you have to use the 16ft extension cables and not the 33 ft extension cables
